LULAC is a national organization with councils all over the country. Formed in 1929, it is the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the country.

The Seguin Council 682, was founded in May 1975 in response to attempts to strip electoral representation from Seguin’s minority communities. After winning back voting rights, the council worked to become a resource for all residents, not just the hispanic community.
Among the founding members of Council 682 were Carlos Tijerina, Jesse Villarreal, Jesus Trinidad, Guadalupe Chapa, Leonardo Molina, Manuel Castilla, Joe Rodriguez, Louis Reyes III, Raul Davila, Marcelino Medina, Agapito Flores (student at TLU from Rio Grande Valley), Valdemar Gonzalez (professor at TLU), Eliodoro Martinez, Roland Rico and Felipe Flores, to name a few.
One of the first priorities we set for the council was to award scholarships. In 1976, one year after the council was founded, we awarded a $1,000 scholarship. To date, we have awarded over $75,000.
Today we continue that work through the LULAC Foundation’s 8th Street Community Garden, as well as raising funds for scholarships awarded to local students by hosting events like the Cinco de Mayo Pachanga and our annual Scholarship Banquet. In addition to those efforts we’re always available to step in and advocate for community members when needed.
